COURSE SYLLABUS for SY 2011-2012
COURSE OVERVIEW In this course, you will learn the most important topics of Microsoft Office 2003. You are first presented with a quick review of the Office Suite, Windows, and Internet Explorer. Next, you will learn more advanced skills for Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint; each application is covered in four units. You will learn how to use Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) to create integrated Office documents in four units that follow the Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint sections. The last section of the course provides an overview of Outlook.
PREREQUISITES: none
TEXT: Beskeen/Duffy/Friedrichsen/Reding, Microsoft Office 2003
Project files: Instructor will provide instructions for obtaining the Project files.
Software: Microsoft Office XP, Internet Explorer 7.
Handouts: Additional handouts will be distributed as needed.
REQUIRED: folder, pen/pencil, username and password
COURSE OUTLINE
Topic 1: Getting Started With Windows
You will be able to: demonstrate basic skills used in all Windows programs
Topic 2: Word Processing
- Getting Started with Word
You will be able to: explore Word’s editing, formatting features, start Word, create a document
- Editing Documents
You will be able to: open an existing file, revise, replace, copy text, save document as a new file, perfect documents using Word’s proofing tools, create professionally designed documents using wizards and templates.
- Formatting Text and Paragraphs
You will be able to: format text, change alignment, indentation, and spacing of paragraphs, “spruce” up documents with borders, shading, bullets, and other paragraph-formatting effects.
- Format Documents
You will be able to: change document margins, determine the page orientation of a document, add page numbers, insert headers and footer, format text in columns, and illustrate documents with clipart.
Class Rules and Expectations
General Rules and Responsibilities
- Be on time.
- Bring your writing utensil everyday.
- Retrieve your work folder at the beginning of each class.
- Sit in your assigned seat.
- Do not abuse locker/bathroom privileges.
- Offensive and disruptive behavior will not be tolerated (see discipline code).
- Be respectful of everyone and everything in class.
- Do not speak when someone else is talking.
- Students are expected to participate in class discussion and cooperative assignments.
- Make-up work because of an excused absence is due within 2 weeks.
- No food or drink in the classroom.
Computer Usage Rules
All students must log in using their own passwords.
No software may be downloaded or installed.
Do not customize the settings on the computers and software in any way.
Do not disconnect or reconnect any equipment. (Ask Ms. Nichols for help if you have a problem.)
Internet use for class assignments only.
No game playing, email, IM, or unauthorized applications allowed.
Printing is by permission only. Raise your hand if you want to print.
Once you have permission, check print preview before you print.
Close all applications and LOG OFF before you leave.
Clean up your workstation.
Attendance:
- Follow LCHS’ attendance policy – bring a note when you are absent.
- 7 unexcused absences from class will result in an automatic failing grade for the quarter.
- Make-up work because of an excused absence is due within 2 weeks. Failure to make-up assignments will result in a zero.
- If you’re absent the day before an assignment, you are responsible for it the day it is due.
GRADING POLICY:
50 % of grade: Tests, Collins Writing, Projects
- Each test counts as 1 major grade (3-4 per quarter). Tests are announced a reasonable time in advance.
- Collins writing counts as 1 major grade.
- Projects count as 1 or 2 major grades.
50% of grade: Classwork
EXTRA HELP:
- Monday, Room C201 or by appointment (Tuesday – Friday until 3:00).
- Students will be encouraged to come for extra help but it is their responsibility to seek it.
