  2. Mr.Chesley i was was wondering how to explain what the accesory organs do . also i have no idea how the food digests into proteins , lipids and starches mechanically and chemically .. can you please help me ?

    • Mr. Chesley says:

The accessory organs make the chemicals needed to break down the macromolecules (proteins, lipids, and carbs). The liver makes bile which is stored in the gallbladder until needed ( it is needed when food leaves the stomach and enters the small intestine), bile breaks up fat into small droplets so enzymes can break it up into fatty acids which can then be absorbed into the bloodstream. The pancreas makes 2 important things which are “squirtedt” into the beginning of the small intestine when food enters it from the stomach…the first is bicarbonate (like the stuff in Tums you take for Acid indigestion) which neutralizes the stomach acid when it enters the small intestine….the second is MANY different enzymes…they hydrolize (break apart by a process called hydrolysis) macromolecules (polymers) in their monomers…. proteins into amino acids, carbohydrates into simple sugars (monosaccharides like glucose), and fats into fatty acids….all of those monomers can then be absorbed into the bloodstream for transport throughout the body….prior to being broken apart they are all too big to be absorbed by the small intestine into the bloodstream! Sorry it took me so long to reply, but James had the Croup and we were at the hospital all weekend :( He is almost better now :)
