Theatre Arts

Course Overview:

Theatre Arts is designed to offer students a chance to learn about theatre and gain performance experience.  The class will contain papers and presentations about different genres and the growth of theatre over time.  Performances will be a large portion of the class, allowing for personal growth as actors.  Grades will be based upon both written work and performances. 

 

Required:  pencil/pen

 

Any text(s) will be provided in class.  Any materials sent home for rehearsal are the responsibility of the student and must be returned to class.

50%    Performances

40%    Written Work/Quizzes

 

General Rules:

 

Assignments will be handed in on time.

 

Class time allowed for rehearsal will be used efficiently or taken away.

 

Theatre Arts class will be a safe environment.  Teasing or general “meanness” will not be tolerated.

 

All students must try all exercises included in this course.

 

 

Outline of Theater Arts Projects

The goal of this class is to cover many different styles and genres of theater.  The class will include performance aspects in each genre of theater, as well a written component.  It is imperative that actors understand the material in any monologue or scene in order to successfully act the part. 

Monologues-Students will choose or be assigned multiple monologues throughout the semester for individual performance.

Ancient Greek Theater-Greek monologues will be provided.  Each student will choose a monologue to research, summarize in a paper, and perform in class.

Ancient Roman Theater-Roman monologues will be provided.  Each student will choose a monologue to research, summarize in a paper, and perform in class.

Scenes-Students will be assigned multiple scenes to act out with partners throughout the semester for performance.

Morality Play- Students will work to create a morality play based on the idea created in the Medieval theater.  This play will be student created and performed for the class.

Renaissance Theater-Students will be split into teams to cover the Renaissance theater of playwrights Shakespeare and Marlowe.  Each student will choose a monologue from the provided packet according to team.  Each student will then summarize in a paper and perform for the class.  The winning team will be the team with the highest combined score.

Full Play-Students will work as a whole cast to act out an entire play on the stage.  Time will be given in class for rehearsal and blocking. 

The Works of Moliere-Students will choose a monologue from the provided packet of Moliere’s famous monologues.  Each student will summarize in a paper and perform for the class.

A Doll’s House- Students will act out the famous play by Henrik Ibsen “A Doll’s House”.  Each student will be responsible for playing a role and researching the play for understanding.

Improvisation-Students will learn basics of improvisation.

Fairy Tale Improvisation-Students will work in small groups to create an improvised version of famous fairy tales.
