We are in Unit 6 Chapter 2 of Visions. Objectives for this week are: observing mental imagery and metaphor in a poem, developing specific food vocabulary (parts of fruits and vegetables), and acquiring vocabulary for sensory description. We will practice writing vivid sensory descriptions of everyday situations and observing sensory, metaphorical descriptions in poetry.

We begin preparing for the MEPA (Massachusetts English Proficiency Assessment) test to be given in 2 weeks. We will complete 3 practice tests from the Department of Education. This is the second MEPA test of the year, to measure the progress we have made in learning English over the last 5 months.
We are also studying Unit 4 Chapter 3, a chapter on reading math word problems about area and perimeter. It should be an easy chapter because students have learned about this in math. There will be a chapter quiz on Friday, March 2.

We will also read the chapter “Pelos / Hair” from House on Mango Street and analyze its use of descriptive writing. On Monday and Tuesday, we will be doing Valentine’s activities and enjoying Ms. Jamieson’s collection of American love songs in a class party.

The grammar exercises are alternating with writing activities and comprehension work on readings about homes from “The House on Mango Street” and beginning English readers.

We are off to a great start! By the end of this week, students should be able to:
Identify school places, classroom words, numbers and colors and some basic conversational vocabulary
Say and write the English alphabet correctly (be able to dictate spelling of your name and write dictated letters correctly)
Identify consonant and short vowel sounds in short words (phonics)
Enter personal information on a form (birthdate, address, emergency contacts)
Follow the daily schedule of classes
Bring materials to class (binder supplied free; bring pencil, sharpener, and extra erasers.)
Follow school rules on clothing and behavior
To see what your student is learning, have him or her show you the class binder and read aloud from the handouts and notes. There are many labeled pictures to help him or her learn new words.
