WEEK 3   November 28th to December 2nd

Non fiction selections  focus on author’s purpose and author’s tone.

BIG QUESTION : what is the source of Inspiration?

Selection :” Georgia O’Keeffe” by Joan Didion p. 570-579

HOme work : Vocabulary study and  vocabulary practice- includes 5 new words and introduction to the Greek root gen

Big Question: How far would you go for Freedom?

Selection : “The Lost Boys’ by Sara Corbett  pp 592-598

Homework : Vocabulary study and Vocabulary practice- includes 6 new words

Assessment : 5 Reading Check Questions  on Dec 2nd  ( period C,D)

  • cultural background of Ancient Greece, its gods,goddess,art,sculpture,myth,etc.
  • The figure/myth of Helen at the center of the Trojan war
  • ‘face that launched a thousand ships
  •   The Illiad as prequel to The Odyssey

Writing: 5 paragraph essay – essay constructed in a cooperative group / Each
person has a task/piece to write

ORQ- How does Odysseus qualify as an epic hero?

January 9th-13th

Classwork:

Continue working on 5 paragraph essay and complete for a test grade

Introductory Paragraph

  • Topic sentence
  • Title, author, genre
  • statement of whether Odysseus is/is not an Epic hero
  • 3 characteristics he demonstrates

Paragraph 2

  • Epic hero characteristic #1 with support from the text

Paragraph 3

  • Epic hero characteristic #2 with support from the text

Paragraph 4

  • Epic hero characteristic #3 with support from the text

Paragraph 5

  • Conclusion which summarizes the above.

Each student is required to pass in their own essay!
