Grade 10   Third Quarter :  Struggle for Definition

Kite Runner  by Khaled Hosseini ( carry over from 2nd quarter)

All students will continue to  read along with tape version to develop college reading skills. Simultaneously, they will have exposure to current events in Afghanistan and be involved in a correspondence with  Roshanna High School, our sister school in Afghanistan  that Classical High sponsors.

Themes:  The power of language,  struggle for definition, sexuality vs.autonomy, cultural heritage, cultural diversity, gender roles, a concept of home (11.4, 10.5)

 

Big questions in Literature:   Who influences me? What do I want in life? What do I believe?

 

Structures and Conventions:  MCAS PREP EXERCISES (Sample tests)

 

Oral Language: “My Neighborhood” Presentation ( 3.14)

 

Reading and Literature:  House on Mango Street( in class)   The Catcher in the Rye (outside reading)

 

Composition: Overview of Poetry, Ordering Sentences, Descriptive Paragraph, 6 Paragraph Essay, MCAS Composition (21, 22)
