Journal: (15+ minutes) Personal Mysteries Questions: Write down questions about life, the world, yourself, others, or ideas that have always confused you, or things about life that you don’t understand. These are questions about life that puzzle a student, or things that they have always wondered about.

6. Listen to the song, “Government Name.”  How has your “government name” shaped your identity? If you were to change your name, what name would you choose and why? If you would not consider changing your name, why? Homework: interview parents/ guardians and find out how or why you got your name.

7. (After interviewing their parents:) What is the “origin” of your name? How, or why, did your parents choose your name?  If you don’t know, think about if you had a child: what would you name them and why?    In class activity: What does your name mean? (use Baby Name Books) What does that say about you?

8. /9.    Write down the name of someone who loved them and they loved and who wished the best for them. Use this persons name to dedicate their journal to, and to help them reflect on if they are meeting the highest standards they could.  Start your journal entry as a letter, “Dear __________, I am dedicating my journal to you because….

Now draw a picture to represent them.

10.   Kahlil Gibran said, “The reality of the other person is not in what he reveals to you, but in what he cannot reveal to you. Therefore, if you would understand him, listen not to what he says but rather what he does not say.” What did you learn about your classmates today/ this week? How were your perceptions of them changed?  How can you help contribute to a positive classroom community this year?
