P. Patty Klibansky

Office Hours: Mon and Tues 2:30-3:30

This course is an introduction to design and the visual arts which focuses on studio work in a variety of art media to build individual artist portfolios.

Required readings and supplies: The readings will be Scholastic Magazine provided by Lynn Fine Arts, online computer articles, readings in the computer labs, and SMART technology in room D101.

  • Materials you must bring to class every day: pencil, eraser, and sketchbook
  • Materials provided by the Lynn Fine Arts department: basic art media such as paint, poster, and clay and individual folders that you will create.

Course objectives: At the end of this course (2 quarters), students should be able to:

  • Be familiar with the elements of art and principles of design, art styles and subject matter;
  • Increase understandings of media and techniques in 2D and 3D art media (sculpture/ceramics: room D102), as well as develop skills in at least 3 areas of interest: photo (photolab), painting, and drawing, for example;
  • Communicate a “personal idea” through a body of art work. For example, clay sculpture, painting and photo on the idea, my place in this space; or my identity.

Course grade:  Grades will be based on your effort, conduct, maintenance of your workspace and art materials, as well as the following:

  1. Final art project/assignments———————-50%
  2. Sketchbook maintenance and development—–25%
  3. Portfolio development of personal idea——— 25%
  4. Final Exam ——will count as 2 graded assignments

         * Make ups of assignments will be available after school on teacher’s night back-Tuesdays.

Attendance:  Attendance is necessary, since the course relies heavily on in-class studio work and is difficult to make up outside of the art studios.  More than 6 absences results in failure for the quarter.
