Course Syllabus for 3rd Quarter
#350 Advanced Math (5 credits)
Prerequisites: Algebra 3 or Precalculus
Text: Larson, Precalculus with Limits, 4th edition (2005)
Required Materials: Text, Notebook and pen/pencil, TI-83/83 graphing calculator or comparable calculator
Course Outline:
Third Quarter –
Topics:
Topic 1: Parabolas
Topic 2: Ellipses
Topic 3: Hyperbolas
Topic 4: Parametric Equations
Topic 5: Polar equations
Students will:
- Write the standard forms of the equations of basic conics
- Analyze and sketch parabolas, ellipses, and hyperbolas
- Eliminate the xy-term in equations of conics and classify conics
- Evaluate sets of parametric equations and graph the curves
- Rewrite parametric equations into rectangular equations
- Graph polar equations
- Convert polar equations into rectangular equations and vice versa
- Instructional Strategies:
- Introduction/Review of topics and discussion of class objectives

- Each test counts as 1 major
grade (2 -3 per quarter) - Each quiz counts as 1/2 major

2 major grades depending on duration and difficulty
