COURSE SYLLABUS for SY 2010-2011

Computer Application 1 (2nd Q)

 COURSE OVERVIEW In this course, you will learn the most important topics of Microsoft Office XP/2003. You are first presented with a quick review of the Office Suite, Windows, and Internet Explorer. Next, you will learn more advanced skills for Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint; each application is covered in four units. You will learn how to use Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) to create integrated Office documents in four units that follow the Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint sections. The last section of the course provides an overview of Outlook.

 

 

PREREQUISITES:    none

TEXT: Beskeen/Duffy/Friedrichsen/Reding, Microsoft Office XP – Illustrated Introductory, Enhanced Edition, Course Technology, 2003.

Project files: Instructor will provide instructions for obtaining the Project files.

Software: Microsoft Office XP, Internet Explorer 7.

Handouts: Additional handouts will be distributed as needed.

COURSE OUTLINE

 

Topic 1:           Formatting Word Documents

Students will be able to: change document margins, determine the page orientation of a document, add page numbers, insert headers and footers, and learn how to format text in columns.

Topic 2:           Excel

  • Excel Introduction

Students will be able to: identify elements in the Excel window, open and save existing files, enter data in a worksheet, and use the extensive Help system.

  • Build and Edit Worksheets

Students will be able to: Plan and build their own worksheets. They will be able to enter labels, values, enter formulas into worksheet cells.

  • Format a Worksheet

Students will be able to: use Excel formatting features to make a worksheet more attractive and easier to read.

  • Create Charts Using Excel

Students will be able to: create, edit and change a chart type. They will learn how to preview, print and add text annotations and arrows to a chart.

Class Rules and Expectations

 

General Rules and Responsibilities

  • Be on time.
  • Bring your writing utensil everyday.
  • Retrieve your work folder at the beginning of each class.
  • Sit in your assigned seat.
  • Do not abuse locker/bathroom privileges.
  • Offensive and disruptive behavior will not be tolerated (see discipline code).
  • Be respectful of everyone and everything in class.
  • Do not speak when someone else is talking.
  • Students are expected to participate in class discussion and cooperative assignments.
  • Make-up work because of an excused absence is due within 2 weeks.
  • No food or drink in the classroom.

 

Computer Usage Rules

       All students must log in using their own passwords.

       No software may be downloaded or installed.

       Do not customize the settings on the computers and software in any way.

       Do not disconnect or reconnect any equipment. (Ask Ms. Fila for help if you have a problem.)

       Internet use for class assignments only.

       No game playing, email, IM, or unauthorized applications allowed.

       Printing is by permission only. Raise your hand if you want to print.

       Once you have permission, check print preview before you print.

       Close all applications and LOG OFF before you leave.

       Clean up your workstation.

 Attendance:

  • Follow LCHS’ attendance policy – bring a note when you are absent.
  • 7 unexcused absences from class will result in an automatic failing grade for the quarter.
  • All make-up work is due within a reasonable amount of time. Failure to make-up assignments will result in a zero.
  • If you’re absent the day before an assignment, you are responsible for it the day it is due.

 

GRADING POLICY:

 Each test counts as 1 major grade (3-4 per quarter). Tests are announced a reasonable time in advance.

  • Collins writing counts as 1 major grade.
  • Projects count as 1 major grade.

(Tests, Collins Writing and Projects are worth 50 % of your grade)

  • Classwork

(Classwork is worth 50 % of your grade. See attached Classwork Rubric)

 

EXTRA HELP:

  • Monday, Room B207 or by appointment.
  • Students will be encouraged to come for extra help but it is their responsibility to seek it.
