Before vacation, you presented ideas about how the country was being divided by one primary question: what is the role of the state vs. the federal government?  This question will lead to Civil War and a fundamental argument about the legality of slavery.

 

Today you will learn more about 5 reasons for pre-Civil War conflict.  Your assignment (25 point paragraph) is to choose from today’s posters &/or your pre-vacation list (Missouri Compromise, 1820; South Carolina Nullification Crisis, 1832-1833; Wilmot Proviso, 1846; Compromise of 1850; Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, 1851; Kansas-Nebraska Act, 1854; Dred Scott Supreme Court decision, 1857; John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry, 1859; Election of Abraham Lincoln, 1860)

and explain how one person or event contributed to the split between the North and the South.

USAvs CSA.  Complete 2 maps in class or finish for homework.

Map 1 designates 2 countries: United States of America & Confederate States of America.  Be careful to color only 2 countries.   Using the map p 336, write the names of states only.  You can ignore territories.  Color theUSA (Union/free plusborder states) one color and CSA (lower and upper South) one color.

Map 2 designates how the states voted in the election of 1860, which was won by Abraham Lincoln.  You need 4 colors for this map.  Again, write the names of states and read The Election of 1860 p 333 in order to learn how each state voted.
