Purpose: The purpose of this syllabus is to give an overview of the Sociology course using the Nextext text “Introduction to Sociology”. The names, subjects and other terms listed below will be covered in class. However, this list should be considered incomplete.
Course Overview: The purpose of learning sociology is to demonstrate to students the various methods of gaining insight into the behavior of groups. Another purpose is to see where and when sociology started as a social science as well as its evolution.
Expectations: At the completion of each chapter, the assignment sheet should be finished; occasionally, additional worksheets will be included; at the end of each chapter, a chapter quiz will be administered; at the end of each section, usually after 2 or three chapters, a section test will be administered to assess students’ knowledge. Class projects may also be assigned.
THIRD QUARTER

Chapter 2 Culture; In this chapter, you will learn about:
- the components of culture
- cultural diversity and change
- American values
Chapter 3 Social Structure and Group Behavior; In this chapter, you will learn about:
- characteristics of social structure
- socialstructures and society
- the nature of groups and organizations
- social interaction
Chapter 4 Socialization; In this chapter, you will learn about:
- the socialization process
- agents of socialization in childhood
- socialization throughout life
Chapter 5 Deviance and Crime; In this chapter, you will learn about:
- deviant behavior
- criminal behavior and the justice system
Chapter 6 Social Stratification and Class; In this chapter, you will learn about:
- social stratification and social mobility
- class structure in the United States
- poverty
