Course Outline:
Q1: Short Narratives
Students will be able to:
- Read and answer detailed questions on selected works.
- Interpret the meaning of new vocabulary by defining words, examining context clues and study word origins.
- Read silently and aloud.
- Identify specific key elements of a short story
- Teach students to identify key element of a short story: Plot and conflict, characters and characterization, setting, point of view, theme.
- Teach students to identify different types of non-fiction works: Autobiography, biography, informational text.
- Open response (short answer) to compare/contrast and cause and effect question.
- Identify present tense verbs. Identify subjects and verbs. Use subject pronouns.
- Identify and use proper capitalization.
- Use the verb to be and recognize possessive nouns.
- Identify and punctuate questions. Identify object pronouns.
Q2: Novel
Students will be able to:
- Read and answer detailed questions on excerpt from selected novels.
- Interpret the meaning of new vocabulary by defining words, examining context clues and study word origins.
- Use an essay organizer and compose a short, 3 paragraph, essay addressing theme and compare/contrast
- Complete a research project, relevant to novel, incorporating internet and library research.
- Discuss the future using will and shall.
- Use verbs with infinitives. Use compound sentences with and.
- Use Could and Couldn’t
Q3: Drama
Students will be able to:
- Read and answer detailed questions on selected play excerpts.
- Interpret the meaning of new vocabulary by defining words, examining context clues and study word origins.
- Complete timeline worksheets
- Analyze characters.
- Identify and differentiate between key elements of drama: Plot and subplot, staging, dialog, historical context.
- Use an essay organizer and compose a three paragraph essay to answer theme questions.
- Identify and compose essay thesis and closing statements.
- Recognize complex sentences with If.
- Identify and use prepositional phrases.
Q4: Poetry
Students will be able to:
- Read and answer detailed questions on selected poems.
- Interpret the meaning of new vocabulary by defining words, examining context clues and study word origins.
- Identify and differentiate between different types of poetry: Epic, ode, sonnet, ballads, and lyric poetry.
- Analyze poetry and identify key figurative language: Metaphor, simile, personification.
- Write original poems with an emphasis on incorporation figurative and descriptive language.
- Recognize commands with Let.
- Recognize and use simple past tense.
- Use dependent clauses with Because.
- Identify superlative and possesive adjectives.
Expectations: Students will be expected to attend class regularly. Tardiness and disruptions will not be tolerated as the class is varied and one-on-one teaching will have to take place. Students will also be expected to participate in the class and group exercises.
